Kathmandu, Oct 09: Notorious criminal Charles Sobhraj may be detained by authorities here for one more week, a top police official said today.
Nepal's immigration department will seek to extend the detention of the serial killer by another week as it is in the final stages of filing a case against him for violation of immigration laws, Deputy Inspector of Police Ganesh K C said here.
Sobhraj will be produced before the Kathmandu district court tomorrow for further extending the period of detention.
He is held in Kathmandu district police office at Hanumandhoka for carrying double passport and travelling on false identity. DSP K C is in charge of the crime investigation department at the district police office, which is looking after the Sobhraj case.
The 59-year-old French national is also wanted for the killing of two foreigners next week, police said. He was arrested from a Kathmandu casino on September 19. Earlier, the court gave permission to detain Sobhraj till November 26. But as the investigation is underway and the court remained closed during Dusshera festival, the immigration department will request for another one week's remand to facilitate investigation.
The son of an Indian businessman and a Vietnamese woman, Sobhraj has been accused of more than a dozen murders of young tourists across Asia. He has spent 21 years in a prison in India for murder. Bureau Report
