Bangladesh's red and green national flag flew at half-mast on Monday as the country mourned the tragic death of Nepalese King Birendra and other royalty in an apparent palace massacre. Bangladesh was observing a one-day national mourning as a mark of respect following the shocking slaying of the king and most of his family on Friday evening, allegedly at the hands of his son.
The Bangladeshi government has said it is deeply shocked and saddened at the deaths of King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and six other royal family members. President Shahabuddin Ahmed and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed have sent separate messages of condolence.
Crown Prince Dipendra, King Birendra's eldest son and heir to the throne, died early on Monday. He allegedly gunned down his parents, brother, sister and four other relatives with a semi-automatic weapon before shooting himself on Friday. Bureau Report
