Islamabad, Jan 04: Pakistan has called for formation of a special committee comprising foreign and interior secretaries of SAARC countries to facilitate free movement of media practitioners in the region. Media practitioners of SAARC region should be allowed free movement across frontiers so that they can perform their professional duties without visas, Pakistan Information Minister Sheikh Rashid said addressing the concluding session of the SAARC journalists summit in Rawalpindi, organised by the South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA).
He said Pakistan is for formation of a special committee comprising foreign and interior secretaries of SAARC countries, which in consultation with media bodies finds a suitable mechanism to facilitate free movement of media practitioners and development of protocol.
Speaking at the conference, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha asked Pakistan and Bangladesh to remove the restriction on free flow of Indian media products.
"Let us break down these artificial walls. The time has come to end this self-defeating approach. South Asia must rise above such short-sightedness," Sinha said.
