Srinagar, Sept 14: Dismissing any possibility of reconciliation, the interim chairman of breakaway faction of Hurriyat Conference Masrat Alam today said there was no place for People's Conference lead by Sajjad Gani Lone and Muslim Conference of Abdul Gani Bhat in the amalgam.
"There is no possibility of reconciliation with those who have deviated from the objectives of the Hurriyat Conference," Alam said.
Alam, who was released from jail earlier this year, said the breakaway group will not attend the meeting convened by former Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq aimed at reconciling the differences between the two factions. There was no place for Lone brothers -- Sajjad and Bilal -- and Bhat in the new Hurriyat structure as they had violated the amalgam's rules and regulations, he said, adding, "We have recognised G N Sumjhi as head of Muslim Conference while G M Hubbi will lead the People's Conference."
Asked if there was any place for deposed chairman Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari in the new formation, Alam said he is welcome only as the head of Ittehadul Muslimeen.
On Ansari's removal, he said a no-confidence motion was passed against him as he had failed to take action against lone brothers for allegedly taking part in last year's assembly polls. Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who is considered as the mastermind behind Hurriyat split, said forum and platforms can be sacrificed if they do not fulfill their objectives.
"Their has been a lot of talk in the past few days about unity (among the separatists)...But if the forums or platforms do not fulfill their aims and objectives, they can be sacrificed," Geelani said yesterday at a book release function without naming Hurriyat.
Referring to the large number of Hurriyat constituents supporting Ansari, he said, "History was full of instances where a determined minority has achieved what an unwilling majority could not achieve."
"To achieve goals numbers do not matter... Sometimes, wisdom might suggest otherwise but the love for the cause should prevail under all circumstances," he said apparently referring to moderation in the Hurriyat attitude since Ansari became chairman. The breakaway faction has been strengthened by withdrawal of staff by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) from the Hurriyat headquarters controlled by Ansari group.
However, JKLF vice-chairman Javaid Mir said the outfit was so far neutral on the split issue and a decision would be taken only after the reconciliation efforts are over.
