The Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), which is implicated in the recent communal disturbances in Kanpur, today accused Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani of promoting the acts such as the recent quran burning incident in the capital and also demanded a debate on the propriety of idol worship.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, SIMI general secretary Safdar H Nagori said the fact that Mr Vajpayee claimed to be ignorant about the march five incident even a week after it happened indicated that the government was trying to cover it up.
''We suspect that Mr Vajpayee and Mr Advani were promoting such acts and trying to cover them up, he alleged and demanded that the two leaders should own responsibility for the heinous incident.

Mr Nagori also demanded a ban on the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal whose activists were allegedly involved in the incident.
