London, Sept 07: New car registrations in Britain rose 2.4% y-o-y in August to 89,338, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The total was the best in August since the introduction of the twice-yearly number plate change in 1999.
It means UK car market is on its way to meet its sales forecast of 2.5m cars for ‘03. Usually, August’s number is small. July’s sales were just under 200,000. “With a change to the ‘53’ number plate on September 1, we might have expected a dip in August registrations but once again the new car market has climbed,” said SMMT CEO Christopher McGowan.
