Afghanistan's new leader, Hamid Karzai, pledged late Tuesday night to end terrorism in his country and said he would welcome an international security force until a national army and police force could take over. Karzai, in Rome on his first trip abroad since being named this month to head an interim Afghan administration, also said that Osama bin Laden could expect no leniency.
I want to have him arrested, he said of the elusive suspect Saudi-born millionaire being actively hunted by US and Northern Alliance forces.
Terrorism has made our people suffer, he told media here, vowing: I am determined to get rid of them (terrorists) not only in Afghanis tan but also in the rest of the world. Karzai made the comments after meeting with former Afghan King Mohammed Zahir Shah who has lived in exile in Rome.
Karzai said the ousted Taliban regime had no place in Afghanistan's future administration.
The common Taliban should go back to their homes and the criminals must face trial.
The Taliban were finished for the time being, he said, while stressing that efforts must be made to prevent their re-emergence in the country. He said he did not know of the Taliban leader Mullah Muhammed Omar's whereabouts. Inshallah (god willing) Afghanistan has been saved from the dangers of Mullah Omar and his terrorist friends.
Karzai, a 43-year-old ethnic Pashtun from southern Afghanistan was nominated to the top post by the ex-king's Rome-based delegation and by the powerful Northern Alliance during landmark talks this month in Bonn, Germany.
