Tezpur, July 07: At least 20 people have died of malaria in Sonitpur district of Assam during the last one month, according to a senior health official. A total of 70 villages under Tezpur, Biswanath and Gohpur subdivisions with a population of about 40,000 have been affected by malaria, chief medical officer Hadi Alam Bora said here today.
A total of 868 patients tested positive for malaria out of blood samples of 16,372 people collected by a medical team in several health camps of Sonitpur district, he said.

Bora said apart from the 70 villages, 11 tea estates were affected by malaria and the health department was organising awareness camps to tackle the situation.
