Hyderabad, Oct 03: Two days after the assassination attempt on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, the state government today appointed a high-level inquiry commission to probe into the security lapses and a special investigation team (SIT) to go into the attack besides suspending and transferring key officials including a DIG.
While Chittoor Superintendent of Police Naveen Chand, reserve inspector and in-charge of bomb disposal squad Ramanaiah were suspended, District Collector Sai Prasad and Deputy Inspector General of Police (Chittoor range) Sivanarayana were transferred.
The high-level inquiry commission, to be headed by retired DGP of Uttar Pradesh Prakash Singh, would study the entire gamut of security system, look into the lapses that led to Claymore landmine blasts at Tirupati on Wednesday and suggest measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents, Andhra Pradesh home minister T Devender Goud told reporters here.
The commission would submit its report in two months, he said adding that Singh, who had also served in BSF, had been chosen for the job in view of his vast experience in anti-insurgency operations in the north-east.
The SIT, headed by a senior IPS officer D T Naik, would specifically probe Wednesday's attack on the Chief Minister.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of senior ministers at Naidu's Jubilee Hills residence here, where the Chief Minister is recuperating.
As the sensational naxalite attack, targeting a Chief Minister for the first time in the state, brought to the fore gaping holes in the security drill, investigators today began piecing together inputs to ascertain what went wrong with the security set-up and how naxalites could have pulled off a high-precision attack.
Security expert and former NSG director S Subrahmanyam, who has been asked by the state government to probe security lapses, held a meeting with the state CID and other police officials at Tirupati after surveying the blast site at Tirumala foothills.
Meanwhile, setting aside protocol, President A P J Abdul Kalam today went to Naidu's residence and enquired about his health condition.
Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, who also called on Naidu, assured Centre's help to state government in tackling the naxalite menace and suggested a two-pronged strategy of rapid development in backward areas and stern measures to stamp out naxal menace.
Naidu, recovering from his injuries on collar bone, chest and nose, made his first appearance before the media terming his escape from the jaws of death as 'God's gift' and vowing to re-dedicate his 'new lease of life' for the development of the state.
