The September 11 attacks in the United States left a total of 3,329 people dead and missing, according to updated but still provisional figures.
In New York, the number of dead and missing in the two suicide plane attacks on the World Trade Centre has been revised down to 3,096, a spokesman for the city's emergency services, John Mohan, said on Thursday.
The jetliner attack on the Pentagon outside Washington left 189 people dead or missing, according to figures published by the US Defence department.
“A fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, killing all 44 people on board. The gradual revision of the toll in New York is due to ongoing efforts to eliminate duplications from the multiple lists of dead and missing that are slowly being merged,” Mohan said.
New York's City Hall has thus far issued 1,986 death certificates to families who requested them, added Mohan. Only 482 people have been confirmed dead, either after their body was identified by sight or after DNA
