Aizawl, Aug 15: At least 4,777 Myanmarese nationals including 2,352 women illegally residing in Mizoram had crossed Mizoram-Myanamar border river Tiau since July 20 till today, the deadline fixed by most of the localities in Aizawl, Champhai superintendent of police K Amon said. Amon told a news agency over phone that the number of these people returning to Myanmar was expected to go down considerably from tomorrow.

Exodus of the Myanmarese nationals from the state which began on July 20 was triggered by rape of a minor by a Myanmarese at a hotel here on July 17.

Xenophohic sentiment was sparked off by the gory incident and almost all the localities in the capital city issued decrees asking the foreigners to leave their respective localities. The deadline fixed by different localities ranged from July 31 to August 15.

Police said that the number of Myanamarese nationals leaving Mizoram for their country might be around 10,000 as counting was conducted only at the Mizoram-Myanmar border police outpost in Zokhawtar.
A senior police official said, "many of them, who had not renewed their 'mahpumtren' or identity card issued to its citizens by the Myanmarese government, might have gone through the Porus 404 km long Mizoram-Myanmar international border avoiding the authorities of that country".
