Raman Puri takes over as new chief of IDS
New Delhi, Oct 20: Going ahead with the new policy of rotation of integrated command, Vice Admiral Raman Puri today took over as chief of the Integrated Defence Staff.
New Delhi, Oct 20: Going ahead with the new policy of rotation of integrated command, Vice Admiral Raman Puri today took over as chief of the Integrated Defence Staff.
Puri, who assumed office after inspecting a tri-service guard of honour, is the first naval officer to head the Integrated Defence Staff. He told newsmen that it was upto the government to decide on the appointment of the New Chief of Defence Staff.
His remarks assume significance as the Defence Minister George Fernandes had told pti recently that government would appoint the CDs in a few months time after political consultations. Puri, who took over from Lt Gen Pankaj Joshi on his superannuation on September 30, is a gunnery and missile expert with his last appointment being flag officer commanding in chief Eastern Naval Command. Significantly, the leadership of the tri services command has now gone to the army.
A recipient of Param Vishisht Seva medal, Ati Vishisht Seva medal and Vishist Seva medal, the admiral during his 37 years tenure in the navy has commanded missile vessels INS Partap and ins Vijaydurg and frontline naval ships like missile destroyers INS Rana and aircraft carrier INS Viraat. Widely known in the navy for his technological expertise, Puri has written a number of papers on radars and missile technology.
