Srinagar, June 26: President A P J Abdul Kalam will take a boat ride through famous Dal lake to reach the Hazratbal shrine on friday during his three day visit beginning today.
Kalam may be the first president to take a boat ride in the Dal lake after more than two decades.
Former president Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy had a pleasure boat ride in Jehlum river during his visit in the late 70s'. Kalam would ride a motor-boat from the Dal lake banks adjacent to Raj Bhavan on boulevard road upto Hazratbal shrine located at the opposite end, where he would offer prayers at the shrine housing the holy relic of prophet Mohammed. The motor-boat ride is expected to take a maximum of 15 minutes and the president would use the same route to come back to Raj Bhavan, from where he is scheduled to fly to a forward location in Uri on the line of control.

Elaborate security arrangements had been made the VVIP ride on the famous lake, which was the much-sought after spot for bollywood producers before the onset of militancy in 1989.

A convoy of motor-boats carrying security personnel will do the "water-opening-route" route which would be followed by pilot motor-boat and then by the VVIP’s boat.

As a precautionary measure, a car cavadale would also be in place at the Hazratbal shrine for easy evacuation of the president in case of exigencies.

The entire Dal lake has already been sanitised even though an alternative by road has also been kept open in case of any change in schedule.
