Meerut, Mar 20: Addressing a joint rally today in the heart of Jat-land, Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Ajit Singh avoided making hard hitting statements against Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
In fact the RLD chief said that SP and his party were ready to join hands with the Congress if it relinquishes its love for BSP. On Advani's yatra, Ajit Singh said it took almost 12 years for people of this country to come up the communal frenzy of 90s and once again the effort is being made to create a similar situation. "Barring BJP and BSP," he said, "We are ready to forge alliance with any party." He asked the Congress to shed its past inhibitions that it is a national party if it wants to defeat BJP.
Mulayam urged the people to strengthen the hand of RLD chief Ajit Singh to make SP-RLD a force to reckon with in the coming Lok Sabha election. Raising issues like corruption, communalism, poverty and price rise, Mulayam Singh said whenever he forms the government in Uttar Pradesh, BJP raises the Mandir issue just to divert the attention of people from development related issues. He said now poor people have become poorer but the Centre is trying to create confusion by raising emotional issues and Advani's Rath Yatra is part of it.
On the other hand, RLD chief Ajit Singh pooh-poohed the "feel good" campaign of BJP and said that it has now run out of slogans in Hindi.
In a scathing attack on BJP, he said this government had witnessed maximum corruption cases in its last six-year regime. Lambasting Advani and Vajpayee, the SP president said both the leaders have cheated the people of the country, as they only served the interest of the Sangh Parivar.
Mulayam also alleged that a secret deal between the BJP and BSP had been finalised.
Political observers feel that this joint rally would consolidate Jat-Muslim vote bank in western UP.
