Japan is expected to dispatch an advance convoy of military vessels and 700 Self-Defence Forces (SDF) personnel to the Indian Ocean by Thursday to support US operations in Afghanistan, a report said.
The troops are to investigate the waters en route to the Indian Ocean, where successive SDF troop shipments will arrive, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said on Saturday. The advance force is likely to be comprised of one or two destroyers, one supply ship and SDF personnel, the business daily said.
The next force is expected to comprise two to three destroyers, including an aegis vessel, as well as one ship to ferry supplies. At least 300 SDF personnel will join this fleet, The Nihon Keizai said, quoting government sources. The advance and follow-up forces will meet in the Indian Ocean, where they will deliver supplies to US forces, the newspaper said.
The follow-up force is expected to leave Japan before the end of November, After a basic plan allowing the SDF to provide noncombat support for the united states is approved by the cabinet, It said. Bureau Report
