New Delhi, May 10 : With the city witnessing a high-pitched battle on today with voting for the Parliamentary elections taking place, the Delhi Police has pulled out all stops to ensure free and fair elections. The police have initiated stern action against bootleggers and musclemen in the city. In April alone, more than 1,700 people have been booked under the Excise Act for bootlegging.
"Apart from that, all guest houses and hotels are being thoroughly scanned to keep a check on the activities of Themusclemen," said city police commissioner K K Paul.
Around 200 polling booths have been identified in the city where violence is likely to take place during voting.
According to a security blueprint prepared by the police, most of these booths, categorised as sensitive and hypersensitive, fall in the east and outer Delhi constituencies.

Outer Delhi , with an electorate of more than 32 lakh, alone accounts for around 60 of these booths. Sahib Singh Verma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is crossing swords here with Congress` Sajjan Kumar. Outer Delhi is closely followed by East and South Delhi constituencies where most of the candidates are high-profile. The seats are keenly fought.

"More forces will be deployed to ensure that polling is free and fair in these booths," said Paul.

About 10,000 home guards from Uttar Pradesh and more than 20 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in Delhi. In addition, over 70,000 cops have been deployed to man the streets to prevent any untoward incidents.

About 40 of these booths have been categorised as hypersensitive. Of these, 13 are in west Delhi and eight in south Delhi .

There are four hypersensitive booths each in east and central districts and three in northeast Delhi .

Several police patrolling teams will be equipped with video cameras to record any incident of violence in the city during polling.

Around 40 video cameras will be used by the police for this purpose. Paul said that wireless sets with better frequency will be used to provide connectivity to all polling booths.

"These will also be provided to engineers to keep them informed in case there is a problem with electronic voting machines in any booth," said Paul.

The crime branch has identified more than 350 prominent bootleggers in the city. Of these, 186 are in the west district alone. It is followed by the southwest district where 66 bootleggers have been identified.
