Patna, Aug 03: At least 44 people have lost their lives in the current spell of floods in Bihar as the overall situation continues to be grim today with major rivers like Bagmati, Gandak, Burhi Gandak, Kosi and Mahananda in spate. Official sources said that four persons, including three of a family, drowned when a boat sank in Gopalganj district yesterday, taking the toll to 44 due to floods so far.

The situation further worsened in west Champaran district with the Gandak breaching embankment at Bairia.

Around two million people continue to reel under the impact of floods in more than 16 districts in Bihar.

Central Water Commission sources said that most of the rivers were rising menacingly and had crossed the danger level at various points along their courses.

Chief minister Rabri Devi has asked the district authorities to intensify relief operation.
Several health and relief centres were functioning round-the-clock for the flood-hit people, the sources said.
