New Delhi, Feb 20: The Election Commission has convened an all-party meeting to discuss the issue of model code of conduct and amendments in the nomination forms, to be filled by candidates in line with the recent changes in the Representation of People`s Act, along with other issues. ``Invitiations were sent to six national political parties and 48 regional parties to attend the meeting,`` a spokesperson for the commission said.
The six national parties, whose presidents were invited by the commission, are the BJP, Congress, BSP, CPI, CPI-M and NCP. The regional parties include the Samajwadi Party, AIADMK, Shiv Sena, DMK, Akali Dal and RJD. The meeting with the political parties would be one of the last major meetings before the announcement of poll schedule, which is likely to be announced on February 23, the day the Karnataka Assembly would be dissolved.
The commission is expected to tell political parties to maintain sanctity of the model code of conduct, which will come into force immediately after the announcement of election dates.
The commission will also seek support of political parties to inform the poll panel about any violation of the model code of conduct or other illegal practices.
It will also inform the parties about the proposed changes in the nomination forms and other election-related material in view of changes in the representation of people act recently. In the forthcoming elections, the EC will use a new simplified nomination form, which would also contain details like their assets and others as directed by the supreme court recently.
The meeting, besides seeking views of political parties on various issues, will also indicate the possible time frame for the elections.
The commission has already completed the consultations with the state and central governments and the meeting with political parties will possibly be the last exercise before announcing the polling dates.
