Nairobi, June 27: Kenyan runner Pamela Chepchumba will be banned by the National Athletics Federation for two years after testing positive for the banned endurance-boosting drug epo, an official said today.
"We will meet on tuesday to ban her for two years", chairman Isaiah Kiplagat said.
Chepchumba first tested positive on March 29 after finishing sixth in the long-course race at the world cross- country championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Her second, or b, sample, which was taken at the same time as the first one, was tested on June 10 and the results were also positive, Kiplagat said. Epo, or Erythropoietin, enhances stamina by increasing the number of oxygen-carrying red bloods cells.

Chepchumba, who has denied taking performance-enhancing drugs, was not immediately available for comment today.

Athletics Kenya suspended Chepchumba from international competition last month pending the result of the test of her b sample.

Chepchumba was one of the five athletes who allegedly tested positive for epo during the championships.

The only other athlete who was publicly identified is Spain's Alberto Garcia, who finished 20th in the men's long-course race. He denied taking drugs.
