Vadodara, June 29: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi would inaugurate Gujarat Electricity Board`s (GEB) first police station at Rajkot today which will handle cases related to power thefts.
The police station would handle cases in five districts of Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh and Kutch, GEB member (administration), Gurprasad Mohapatra said yesterday.
GEB is perhaps first amongst the state electricity boards in the country to take steps in this regard after President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam gave assent to the bill passed by state assembly in this regard on March 26 last, he said. Due to setting up of this police station, stringent measures to combat power thefts have come into force in the state, Mohapatra said adding, the police station will have a staff of eight policemen including a police inspector.
The new act, Indian Electricity (Gujarat Amendment) Bill, 2003, gives more power to GEB to tackle power thefts effectively, GEB chairperson Dr Manjula Subramaniam said. The act empowers GEB to enter, inspect, break open and search any premises in which it has reason to believe that energy has been unauthorisedly consumed.
Penalty for theft of energy is very tough as the person found guilty of it shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine of Rs three lakh or both, she said.
