Steel Authority of India is likely to sell its captive power plant at Bokaro to Damodar Valley Corporation, internally valued at Rs 560-crore, a move which may help a corporation to wipe out most of its over Rs 700 crore losses.
Mecon, an independent consultant, was appointed for evaluating the power plant at Bokaro which had recommended Rs 560 crore value, industry sources said, adding DVC had cleared the deal more than a month back.
When contacted, SAIL officials confirmed the development, but refused to give details of the deal saying the ministry of power was looking into it.
SAIL has already transferred the assets and manpowwer to Bokaro power supply company, a 100 per cent subsidiary of SAIL in which equity would be sold to DVC, the officials said.
Proceeds worth Rs 560 crore could be a big financial help for SAIL which posted a net loss of Rs 729 crore in the last financial year inspite of an over Rs 8,400 crore financial package given to the steel giant in February 2000.
