Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Nov 15: Around 300 girls studying in a reputed high school here found themselves shorn of their long and prided tresses, after being at the receiving end of someone's idea of a lark. It all happened when the school administration received a letter, reportedly from an organisation at Hyderabad, stating that the school had been selected for the award of scholarships to girl students, amounting to Rs 150 per month for one year.
The letter said an application, along with a copy of the bio-data would have to be sent in the enclosed pro-forma within three days and that one of the conditions that would need to be fulfilled was that the applicants should trim their hair.
A passport size photo, for proof, should be sent along with every application, the letter added.
As only three days time was given, the school administration had no opportunity to verify the authenticity of the communication.
The head master informed the parents, most of whom belong to socially weaker sections, about the scholarship scheme. The parents, in a bid to avail the facility, readily sent their daughters to beauty saloons and had their long plaits trimmed.
The school administration, which sent 300 applications, found that there was no response. The administration, which grew suspicious, sent a teacher to the address mentioned in the communication at Hyderabad and to their dismay, found that there was no such organisation and that they had been taken for a ride.
The head master admitted later that he had committed a mistake by not verifying the communication, in his anxiousness to send the applications before the deadline.
