New Delhi, Sept 05: India today said it is examining a United States draft resolution to be introduced in the UN setting up a multinational force in Iraq. "We are looking at it," External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha told reporters after inaugurating the South Asia Forum (SAF) that intends to create awareness about the critical need for peace and economic cooperation among seven SAARC countries. He did not elaborate.

India has made it clear that it could consider sending troops to Iraq to participate in a stabilisation force in the war-ravaged country if there was an explicit u n mandate. The five permanent Security Council members have begun negotiations on the draft that seeks troops and money from other countries but without American ceding authority in any field, including military operations and political process.

Earlier, addressing SAF members, MPs and diplomats, Sinha called for a movement towards establishing a South Asia union with one currency, one tariff regime and free movement of goods, services and people.

At the same time, he said all India sought was that its neighbours should be sensitive to its security concerns and take no action which undermined the country's security. "It is in the collective interest of the people of South Asia that governments of the region work to strengthen each other's security rather than undermine it," the minister said.

Referring to the outpour of emotion in India for heart surgery of Pakistani girl Noor Fatima and recent exchange of parliamentary and media delegations with Pakistan, Sinha said these "are symbols of what is possible and what should be the situation in our mutual relationships."
