New Delhi, Sept 06: Results to the keenly contested annual Delhi University Students' Union elections will be declared today. Low to moderate voting was reported in the polls held yesterday.
Voting was largely peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from any of the colleges, police said.
Polling was in the region of 35 to 40 per cent and was relatively higher in west and south Delhi, sources said.
Police detained 64 persons as a preventive measure to avoid any incidents of violence. Out of them, 10 each were from National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Hockey sticks, cricket bats and iron rods were seized by the police from vehicles.
In addition to traditional rivals NSUI and ABVP, a third organisation, the Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) is in the fray.
"Though the major contest was between the ABVP and the NSUI, other contestants will get a large part of the floating vote. They (other contestants) will not win," ABVP state secretary Jatin Mohanty.
NSUI sources expressed confidence "they would sweep" the polls, while Mohanty exuded "guarded optimism".
