Samajwadi Party (SP), on Saturday, urged Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri to take stern action against those responsible for the recent police firing on innocent people of Baleni village in Baghpat district leading to death of two persons and injuries to many others. In a memorandum, the party urged the governor to direct the government to enhance the ex-gratia amount to Rs 10 lakhs, besides release of innocent people lodged in the jail and filing of cases against the policemen responsible for the incident.
Addressing newspersons in Lucknow, senior party leaders Ahmed Hassan and Shivpal Yadav who had visited the village alleged that police acted in a high-handed manner and fired at the villagers from tree-tops. Accusing the BJP government of vitiating the atmosphere, the SP leaders demanded the resignation of chief minister Rajnath Singh owning moral responsibility for the incident.
The leaders alleged that BJP led government wanted to terrorise the workers of the Samajwadi Party by instigating incidents like Baghpat just before the coming assembly polls in the state. Bureau Report
