Nasik, Sept 12: A jeep driver has been arrested in connection with the August 27 stampede during Kumbh Mela by a special police squad in Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, according to police. The special squad had gone to the northern state to trace three vehicle owners and two Mahants against whom it has registered offences under various Sections of IPC in connection with the stampede at Sardar Chowk area in Panchavati here during the second royal bath. Police said after the royal bath was over, two Mahants and his Sadhus entered the Sardar Chowk locality towards Ramkund in three jeeps and threw coins, Prasad and other things in the water, which the pilgrims, gathered in narrow lane rushed in to grab, resulting in the stampede that claimed around 30 lives and left 11 injured. Special police squad went to Vrindavan and other places in Uttar Pradesh and launched search for three vehicles and arrested a jeep driver yesterday.
