World number 47 Amy Frazier marked her 14th consecutive appearance in the event with a 6-3 2-6 6-1 victory over Zimbabwe's Cara Black in the other opening round match.
It was Frazier's third straight win over Black.

The tournament has lost two of its big-name players, with top seed Serena Williams pulling out with a knee injury and fifth seed Lindsay Davenport withdrawing because of a foot problem.
