Poonch, Sep 16: Two families had a narrow escape when their houses were hit by mortar bombs fired from Pakistan in the border town of Poonch shortly after polling for the first phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir began here today, officials said.

Nine to ten shells were fired from across the Line of Control, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) poll security, Rajouri-Poonch, Ashok Gupta said adding however, that no one was killed or injured in the shelling. While the first bomb landed at a cremation ground at 8:30 am, half an hour after the polling began, the other shells fell at Poonch airport, Betar Nallah, Sheri-e-Kashmir bridge, bus stand and Purani Poonch localities, he said.

Families of one Rajinder Singh and Om Prakash had a close shave as they had left the house to cast their votes when the rooves of their houses caved in as the shells rained on them.

The Pakistani army also fired a shell from its Langur Post to target a chopper about to land at the Poonch airport, the police official said adding, however, that the helicopter was not hit.
