Chennai, Nov 09: MDMK General Secretary Vaiko today sent a telegram to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, requesting him to take suitable steps to prevent the arrest of the six journalists of 'The Hindu' and 'Murasoli'. "It is the prime duty of the Indian government headed by you to ensure protection to the freedom of the press in the country and annul the fascist decision of the state government," Vaiko said in his telegram.
Vaiko said the resolution imposing 15 days of simple imprisonment to the six journalists was not only "undemocratic" but also an "attack on democratic norms", an MDMK press release here said.
Vaiko, who is also the editor of party organ 'Sangoli', and eight of his party colleagues, who are all serving jail term in Vellore prison under Pota, also went on a day-long fast in the jail in support of journalists.
