Peshawar, June 27: A missile was fired early today at a telephone exchange in southwestern Pakistan, injuring two employees and damaging the building and its equipment, a government official said. The attack in the north Waziristan tribal region, about 270 kilometers southwest of Peshawar, left hundreds of residents without phone service, said Iqbal Khan, an administration official in the region. No one took responsibility for the attack in the tribal belt, which borders Afghanistan and where Taliban and al-Qaeda fugitives are believed to have sought refuge. Tribesmen are deeply sympathetic with both Taliban and al-Qaeda. "This is a terrorist attack and we are investigating," Khan said refusing to identify any group by name.
