Srinagar, Nov 23: Asserting that cross border infiltration had come down considerably, Army today said it would go on an offensive against the militants during winter.
According to statistics collected on the ground, there are around 2500-3000 militants active in the Valley. Infiltration has come down considerably and we would go on an offensive to eliminate ultras to curb their activities before the onset of summer next year, general officer commanding, Northern Command Lt Gen Hari Prasad told reporters here.
He said foreign militants formed nearly two-thirds of the militant cadres active in the state and they were finding difficulty in local recruitment. Foreign militants have been asked by ISI to increase their tenure of stay here. It is an indication of waning local support, he added. Prasad said infiltration had come down considerably with strengthening of deployment along the Line of Control (LoC) and use of latest surveillance gadgets.
More deployment along the LoC, a second tier of security and latest surveillance technologies have been put to use which had helped in intercepting the infiltrators, he said.
In the last six months, the army has made 93 intercepts in which nearly 300 ultras have been killed, he said.
Prasad said the fencing of 575-km Line of Control from Akhnoor to Gurez will be completed by October next year. So far, we have completed 170 km. Barring Gurez sector, the fencing will be completed by June next year. Gurez sector will be done by October, he added.
