Yelstin, 70, arrived late Saturday in the German capital and spent the night at the Russian embassy before being taken to the Rudolf Virchow clinic with a heart problem, an embassy employee said.
The clinic is run by an internationally renowned open-heart surgery specialist, Roland Hetzer.
Hetzer has worked closely for a long time with US cardiologist Michael Debakey, who carried out Yeltsin's Quintuple heart bypass in 1996.
Questioned by the Tagesspiegel about his famous patient, Hetzer refused to give any information.
Yelstin spent much of his second term in office hampered by various ailments, and abruptly resigned on December 31, 1999.
