New Delhi, June 16: Security at key points in the Kashmir Valley including the strategically important Jawahar Tunnel was reviewed earlier this week by Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General S C Chaube.

Chaube visited the key installations in the valley from June 12 to 15 and reviewed the security preparedness of ITBP units and security for the Jawahar Tunnel, an ITBP release said here today.
Nine battalions of ITBP, who guard the 2115-km Indo-China border at high altitude, are deployed for duties in Kashmir Valley, it said, adding more personnel are likely to be posted there in the near future.

Having been deployed for counter insurgency operations, ITBP has helped the nation in fighting terrorism, it said, adding Chaube emphasised the need to maintain the highest tradition of the force. Achievements of ITBP includes gunning down of 54 militants, apprehending 12, recovery of 74 AK-47 rifles, 9 pistols, 3 rocket launders, eight grenade launchers and large quantity of ammunition, it said.

So far 49 ITBP personnel have lost their lives in the militancy related operations in the valley, the release said. Bureau Report
