Colombo, Aug 10: India had to be content with two silver and a bronze today as gold medals continued to elude the country in the 14th Asian Athletics Championship here today.
Women high-jumper bobby Aloysius and Heptathlete J J Shoba bagged the two silver and long distance runner Aruna Devi won the bronze for India on a day that was dominated by women athletes from Kazakhstan who took home three gold medals.
Koji Murofushi of Japan set a new Asian record in the men's hammer throw while Susanthika Jayasinghe of Sri Lanka re-affirmed her supremacy in the short sprint at the Sugathadasa stadium.
Bobby, who missed a bronze in the recent Commonwealth games at Manchester, cleared 1.84 metres but failed in her bid to top 1.88 metres in all her three attempts.
Kyrghystan's Tatiana Efimenko went on to clear 1.92 metres to take the gold.
Twenty-year-old shoba, who was leading the field at the end of six events, got only 788 points in the 800 metres to finish with 5,775 points and had to be content with the second place, while the gold went to Svetlana Kazanina of Kazakhstan (5,841). Another Indian soma Biswas was placed fourth in the event with 5,609 points.
Aruna Devi won the bronze after finishing third with 35m 38.70 sec in the women's 10,000m. The gold in the event was won by Ham Pong-Sil (34m 44.92 sec) and the silver went to Jo Pun-Hui (35m 00.63sec), both from north Korea.
