BMW case main accused Sanjeev Nanda on Wednesday moved the Delhi High Court seeking permission to go to the US for study and a direction to the trial court to expedite proceedings in the case. Justice K S Gupta after hearing arguments on his petition and clarification from the special public prosecutor about the status of the trial, reserved his order on the plea.
Senior advocate R K Anand, appearing for Nanda, said he has got admission in Columbia University and had to join there in September next.
Before that he has to fulfil various formalities, Anand said pleading the high court to issue direction to the trial judge to hear the case on day-to-day basis.
Prosecutor I U Khan said he would have no objection on permission being granted by the court if certain conditions are imposed and the accused gives a guarantee to fulfil them. When the court asked Khan to spell out the conditions, he said the accused should execute a reasonable surety bond, give a commitment to appear in the court on the required dates and furnish complete contact address in the US.
On the question of day-to-day hearing, the court said a direction could not be possible as the trial court is already burdened with so many cases.
Sanjeev, the grandson of former naval chief Nanda is facing trial for allegedly crushing to death six people, including five policemen, while driving his BMW car at high speed in a South Delhi colony in January 1999.
