Surat, July 09: A local court today deferred till July 17 hearing on the regular bail application of Sunanda Shetty, mother of actress Shilpa Shetty and prime accused in the alleged extortion case involving. Chief judicial magistrate R P Mehta deferred the hearing after public prosecutor Jatin Gandhi moved an application seeking deferment due to some "judicial work" that required him to go out of the city.
Sunanda was present in the court. Earlier, the court had granted bail to her husband Surendra Shetty on certain conditions.
Shilpa's parents are facing charges of "hiring" an underworld gangster to extort Rs 80 lakh from a Surat-based Prafful saree owner Pankaj Agrawal as an amount payable to Shilpa for an ad-film that she did for the company in 1998. Umra police in Surat has registered a case against Sunanda, Surendra and Malayasia-based gangster Fazlu Rehman and claims to have in possession the alleged conversation between the actress's parents and the gangster.
