Chennai, Feb 19: They not only prepare delicacies that melt in the mouth, but also have hearts that melt on seeing the plight of under-privileged children. As many as 20 reputed chefs from 15 hotels in the city will come together to combine their culinary skills on February 28 for a noble cause.
The 'Chef and Child Culinary Extravaganza-2004,' organised by the South Indian Culinary Association (SICA), will offer an opportunity to savour the delectables, the proceeds of which will go to hope foundation, a non-profit charitable organisation.
''This is the first-of-its-kind food mela in south India, which will make available the best cuisines of the city's premier hotels on a single platform at an affordable cost,'' SICA general secretary P Soundararajan told reporters here.
The association aims at raising a minimum of Rs 2.5 lakh, as the hope foundation is in a dire need of funds to find a place of its own and provide shelter to 29 HIV/AIDS infected women and children.
''Though such charitable events by culinary associations have been in vogue abroad for the past 50 years, only now have we woken up to the cause,'' Soundararajan admitted.
The event would also help strengthen the relationship between various chefs across the country and instill appreciation for social welfare issues amongst important members of the public, he added.
Besides a range of gourmet meal, the guests will also be served ''desserts'' of quality entertainment such as fashion and comedy shows, raffles and plays.
The SICA has also instituted SICA Golden Hat Award, for which the pre-requisites for nomination include a minimum of two decades of continuous culinary experience and at lease five years expertise as executive chef.
