BJP candidate retains Laban seat in Meghalaya by-poll
Shillong, Sept 29: BJP retained the Laban Assembly seat in Meghalaya with its candidate Jopsimon Phanbuh declared elected in the by-poll defeating her nearest rival Sanbor Shullai of NCP by 1639 votes.

Phanbuh polled 3114 votes, while Shulai polled 1475, returning officer and deputy commissioner of east Khasi Hills district D P Wahlang said announcing the result.
Stalin Lyngdoh of Congress emerged as the third contestant bagging 1341 votes. The by-poll, which had seen 13 contestants in the fray, was held on September 26.
It was necessitated following the death of former Meghalaya Home Minister and BJP MLA T H Rangad on July 4. Phanbuh is the widow of the dead BJP leader. After the declaration of the results, jubilant BJP supporters took out a procession carrying Rangad's portrait in a jeep and shouting slogans.
