Direct sellers demand separate law to govern their trade
New Delhi, Sept 07: Alleging government harassment in their functioning, the Rs 2311 crore direct and multi-level marketing industry including US major Amway Enterprises today demanded a separate legislation to govern their trade.
Saying provisions of Prize Chits and Money Circulation Scheme (Banning) Act, 1978 are being wrongly invoked against them, these companies have contended that direct selling of products is becoming increasingly difficult due to "flawed opinion of the regulators".
"There should be a separate legislation for those in the business of direct/network/multi-level marketing employing 1.24 million people, as existing regulations are full of flaws causing harassment and commercial losses to the investors," vice-chairman, Indian Direct Selling Association, william s
Pinckney said.
Consumer affairs ministry has even communicated to all states the inapplicability of 1978 Act against those in the business of direct selling, Pinckney, who is managing director and CEO of Amway India, added.
IDSA and Frontier Trading have asked the government to enact a separate law to cover the sector.
