London, July 14: The British government today cautioned Britons against travelling to Myanmar, where the military government has cracked down on pro-democracy campaigners including Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy. Foreign office minister Mike O'Brien said he had written to the association of British travel agents ``in light of the recent dreadful developments'' to urged tour operators ``to stop arranging holidays there.''
``Foreign visitors remain a source of hard currency for the regime, much of which increasingly ends up in the private bank accounts of the generals and their associates,'' O'Brien said. Earlier this month, the government asked major cigarette manufacturer British American Tobacco Plc to pull out of Myanmar because of the southeast Asian country's human rights record. Bureau Report
