West Bengal, July 04: Either Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has been hoodwinked or in his enthusiasm to woo investors to West Bengal, he’s just got the wrong message. The hulabaloo is about the Italian leather and fashion giant Gucci having supposedly promised the West Bengal chief minister during the latter’s four-day visit to Italy that it would send representatives to assess the facilities in the state and decide on setting up a plant near Kolkata. According to Mr Bhattacharjee, who had gone along with an 11-member suit-and-tie entourage (the CM, however, insisted on wearing a shirt) to make Italians put their money where the CM’s mouth was, some other Italian firms had also shown interest in investing in sectors such as chemicals, jewellery and leather goods. All that sounded very promising — that is, until Gucci reportedly clarified that during the CM’s visit to the company headquarters in Florence, “business was not discussed”.
