Kolkata, June 10: Six members of the Kolkata
Municipal Corporation's dissolved Mayor-in-Council (MIC) were
arrested today on charges of assaulting Municipal Commissioner
Debasish Som inside the KMC premises yesterday.
Anup Chatterjee, Mala Roy, Pradip Ghosh, Javed Khan,
Samsuzzaman Ansari and Moinul Haq Chowdhury were arrested from different areas of the city on the basis of an FIR filed by
the Municipal Commissioner at the new market police station
yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Kundan
Lal Tamta told a news agency.
Search was on for another MIC member Swapan Samaddar. Som was physically assaulted by at least seven MICs inside his chamber demanding withdrawal of a circular in which he stated that the commissioner would obey the direction of the mayor only and not of any MIC, KMC sources said.
Reacting to the assault that stalled work at Trinamool Congress-BJP controlled KMC for the day, mayor Subrata Mukherjee last night dissolved the 10-member MIC in consultation with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee acceded to the mayor's demand for dissolution of the MIC to "streamline and discipline the members".
A one-man committee headed by Trinamool Congress state president Sanjay Bakshi has been formed to inquire into the incident. The committee was asked to submit its report by this noon on the basis of which a decision would be taken by the mayor.
KMC's functioning would be guided by him, deputy mayor Meena Devi Purohit and the chairman of the MIC in consultation with controlling officers (executives). Bureau Report
