Diamond Harbour, Oct 23: Five policemen were injured, two of them seriously, when angry villagers of Bonoshyamnagar in West Bengal`s South 24 Parganas district beat them up for failing to apprehend a gang of dacoits.
The two injured police men, both sub-inspectors of Patharpratima police station, were being treated at hospital, after day before yesterday`s attack by locals, police sources said yesterday. The dacoit gang raided some houses of the village and went on a looting spree. While the villagers alleged a police force from Patharpratima police station despite spotting the gang did not chase, the sources maintained the police personnel had been called when the dacoits were about to escape. The condition of the two seriously injured police officers, being treated at Patharpratima Block Hospital, was stable now. The situation in the area was under control.
