St. Petersburg (Florida), July 30: Women's tennis world number one Serena Williams will be sidelined until at least the US Open by a strained left quadriceps, the WTA tour announced yesterday.
Since winning Wimbledon, Williams has withdrawn from all
her warm-up events before this year's final grand slam,
including next week's event in Carson, California.
This means she will make defence of her US Open crown starting August 25 in New York without having played a WTA tune-up match, although practice sessions with her sister Venus could provide an intense workout.
Serena Williams' thigh injury was discovered on Monday after Williams had an MRI on her left leg in Los Angeles, forcing her to pull out from this week's event in San Diego. She strained her quadriceps last weekend while practicing.
Williams, 21, missed a Stanford, California, event last week because of pain in her left knee not associated with her strained quadriceps. Bureau Report
