Unidentified assailants fired three rockets early on Monday in Quetta in southwest Pakistan near the Afghan border. No injuries were reported. Police said they were trying to determine who fired the rockets, which damaged several houses.
Such incidents occur periodically in the region, where local tribesmen have easy access to weapons. Some of the attacks have been blamed on separatists in surrounding Balochistan province who opposed the central government.
Quetta has been a base for many afghan tribal leaders, including Gul Agha, who has been reinstated as Governor of the former Taliban stronghold of Kandahar province in Afghanistan. Agha got his old job back on Sunday in a deal aimed at settling differences among rival tribal commanders. The agreement was presided over by Hamid Karzai, who takes power as Afghanistan's interim leader on December 22. Bureau Report
