Ludhiana, Aug 30: The Centre may provide some relaxation to the steel industry so that steel can be imported from different countries at cheaper rates, the Union Steel Minister B K Tripathy said here on Friday.
Speaking at the concluding function of the 17th National Steel Consumers' Council Meet here, he said the ministry has decided to recommend the withdrawal of public notification number of the Director General of Foriegn Trade (DGFT).
He said that the public notification number of the DGFT makes it mandatory that the steel imported into the country fulfils the specifications laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
The steel Industry had been maintaining that the BIS clause was arbitrary and unjustified and had allegedly been introduced at the behest of top five steel manufacturers of the country.
He said that due to deregulation introduced in 1992 in steel industry the government could not regulate or monitor the steel prices.
