Siliguri, June 03: The All India Defence Accounts Employees' Association (AIDAEA) today demanded a CBI inquiry into purchase of computers worth Rs 100 crore in 1999,
alleging that 80 per cent of the equipment could not be installed.
"We demand a CBI inquiry into the whole issue", secretary
general of AIDAEA S P Aich said alleging a cut back and an
attempt to hush-up the matter.
Aich also claimed that the concerned auditor had raised objection to the bulk purchase but no measure against the deal could be taken because of "some interference".
He further said the AIADEA national conference beginning tomorrow would take a resolution against defence move to reduce the frequency of audit which, if implemented, would not only "increase corruption and economic offence in Indian defence but would also lead to drastic cut in audit staff".
He said that around 40 per cent of the existing 28,000 audit staff would be thrown out of job if the existing system of quarterly audit in the department was replaced by half-yearly audit, as proposed.
