Santiniketan, Apr 15: Rabindranath Tagore's 142nd birth anniversary was celebrated here today, the Bengali New Year's day.
Though Tagore was born on the 25th day of Baisakhi, the first month in the Bengali calendar, the poet's birthday is traditionally celebrated on the first day of the month.
This is because in earlier days, the hostel of the Visva-Bharati university was closed in the later part of the month due to extreme heat in the peak of summer.

At the crack of dawn students performed 'Vaitalik' that sings Paen to victory of light over darkness revealing itself in a burst of splendour.

Later, a divine service at the Santiniketan Mandir was conducted by the Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Sujit Kumar Basu. There, he read out a sermon which was delivered by the poet in his time.

Paying homage to the poet, Basu said that the day was a ''day of reawakening for us."
A large number of tourists attended the birth anniversary function.
