Karnataka IT department gave a clean chit to Huawei Technologies, a Chinese telecom company that had been embroiled in a controversy for reportedly helping the Taliban regime and Pakistan in upgrading their telecom surveillance network. Prima facie, there is no case against the company. They are doing their job, Karnataka it secretary Vivek Kulkarni told reporters after executives of the company which has set up its shop here in 1999 gave a detailed report about its activities.
But, Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna asked the Centre to act decisively against the Chinese firm, if it is found to pursue activities that are Inimical or hostile to the national interest. It was for the Union government to act, Krishna said but also added that the state government would also hold an enquiry and alert all possible sources, including the cyber police station here, to look into the matter.
The state it department chief said the company executives had given all details regarding their operations, projects and list of clients and What they are doing here. They had briefed the external affairs ministry officials also.
To a pointed query if he gave a clean chit to the company, Kulkarni replied in the affirmative. Huawei Technologies has an R&D centre in Bangalore.
The company was in the eye of a storm following reports about its help to the taliban regime but it had dismissed them as baseless, saying it would never associate itself with any unlawful regime.
