Lucknow, May 18: Alleging that the CB-CID probe ordered into the Madhumita Shukla murder case by Mayawati government was just an "eye wash", opposition parties in UP have demanded that the Centre order a CBI inquiry into the case. Former Chief Minister and Rashtriya Kranti Party president Kalyan Singh urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to take suo moto cognisance of the murder case and order a CBI inquiry to unravel the truth.
"It is Vajpayee's moral responsibility to order a CBI inquiry before visiting Lucknow, where the murder was committed, as he represents the city in Lok Sabha," said the former BJP leader.
Vajpayee is due to arrive here on Tuesday for a two-day visit. In Varanasi, Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh said, "The crime branch-CID works under the chief minister and hence an impartial inquiry is not possible."
He said he had written a letter to Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani urging him to order a CBI inquiry into the case.
UP Congress president Arun Kumar Singh Munna said only a CBI inquiry would be "impartial".
Yesterday, Chief Minister Mayawati had sacked Stamps Minister Amar Mani Tripathi for his alleged links with the poetess and ordered a CB-CID probe into the murder. "The action taken by Mayawati is only meant to fool the people," Munna said, adding if Mayawati's intention had been fair, she would have removed Tripathi immediately after the murder on May 9.
Alleging that the CB-CID inquiry was a "sham", Kalyan Singh said Mayawati's decision was simply a "cover up" to shield the minister.
Amar Singh alleged that the government was trying to frame him and other party leaders in the case, adding that the removal of Tripathi from the ministry was only a "drama". Bureau Report
